Learning Outcomes
- Ultimately, a successful PhD student has working knowledge of the main theories of sociology, the principles of science and research design, and the ability to conduct scientifically meritorious work on his/her own. Teaching ability is necessary for those who pursue academic appointments.
- Students will write a Doctoral dissertation that demonstrates their ability to conduct original, high-quality, publishable research. Students are encouraged to submit their work to peer-review journals and other publication outlets.
- Students will recognize and be knowledgeable of the work produced by major scholars of the discipline. Students will also be able to apply the scientific methods and statistical analyses that are common to the field.
- Students will synthesize state-of-the-art theory and research in the chosen areas of interest.
- Students will perform research projects with faculty for the purposes of developing professional research skills.
- Students will demonstrate strong technological and information resource skills.
- Students will take part in several discussions involving faculty and additional students that pertain to becoming a professional sociologist. Various types of career and work issues will be discussed.
